Two-Day Trip to the Rift Valley

Day 1: Addis Ababa to Awassa

After breakfast, depart from Addis Ababa and head south through the scenic Ethiopian Rift Valley, part of the vast Afro-Arabian Rift system. The drive offers stunning views of dramatic landscapes and a chain of lakes that support diverse birdlife and thriving ecosystems.

• First Stop – Tiya (UNESCO World Heritage Site):
  Explore the ancient archaeological site of Tiya, home to 36 stone monuments, including 32 intricately carved stelae adorned with mysterious symbols. These stones offer insight into the region’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

• Lake Ziway:
  Continue to Lake Ziway, known for its vibrant birdlife and five volcanic islands. Enjoy a short boat trip to Bird Island, where you might spot pelicans, storks, and even hippos lounging along the shores.

• Lunch:
  Stop at a local restaurant for lunch before continuing your journey.

• Drive to Awassa:
  Proceed to Awassa, a vibrant lakeside city in the Sidama region. Upon arrival, transfer to your accommodation and unwind while taking in a beautiful sunset over Lake Awassa.

Overnight: Haile Resort, Awassa

Day 2: Awassa to Addis Ababa

• Lake Awassa Fish Market:
  Start your morning with a visit to the bustling fish market on Lake Awassa. Watch fishermen haul in their fresh catch of Tilapia and catfish, and observe locals enjoying a traditional lakeside breakfast.

• Amora Gedel Park:
  Explore Amora Gedel Park, a lush lakeside retreat perfect for birdwatching and spotting Colobus monkeys—distinctive black-and-white monkeys swinging through the trees.

• Begin Return Drive to Addis Ababa:
  Head back to Addis Ababa, enjoying scenic stops along the way:

  • Abijatta-Shalla Lakes National Park:
    Visit this protected area, known for its birdlife—including large flocks of flamingoes—and geothermal hot springs. The park also shelters a few species of mammals.

  • Lake Langano:
    Make a brief stop at Lake Langano, a popular swimming destination with calm, bilharzia-free waters, ideal for a refreshing break.

• Arrival in Addis Ababa:
  Reach the city in the afternoon. You’ll have time to freshen up and prepare for your departure.

• Farewell Dinner:
  In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian dinner at a cultural restaurant, complete with live music and dance performances representing Ethiopia’s rich ethnic diversity.

• Transfer:
  Your driver will then take you to Bole International Airport for your departure flight.
