Itenerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa – Flight to Semera – Drive to Dallol – Lake Karum – Hamed Ela
Take a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. Upon arrival, meet your local guide and begin your journey into the Danakil Depression—a region known for its dramatic landscapes, geological activity, and extreme heat.
Travel through Berhale, the traditional gateway into the Depression, then continue to your camp at Hamed Ela. Experience the stark beauty of the Afar region’s terrain along the way.
In the afternoon, visit Lake Karum to witness the spectacular sunset over the salt flats. If timing allows, watch camel caravans transporting salt—an iconic image of the Danakil.
Overnight: Camping at Hamed Ela
Day 2: Hamed Ela – Dallol Exploration – Drive to Dodom – Trek to Erta Ale Volcano
After breakfast, drive to Dallol, one of the lowest points on Earth (approx. 130 meters below sea level). Explore its vibrant sulfur springs, multicolored acid pools, and otherworldly salt formations.
Visit the nearby traditional salt mines, where Afar communities extract salt by hand—offering unique insight into life in this extreme environment.
In the afternoon, continue driving to Dodom, the base of Erta Ale Volcano. Prepare for an evening trek (approx. 3 hours) to the summit.
At the crater, gaze into one of the world’s few permanent lava lakes—a surreal and unforgettable experience.
Overnight: Camping near the crater rim
Day 3: Erta Ale – Lake Afdera – Semera – Flight to Addis Ababa – Departure
Wake early to witness sunrise over the lava lake, a magical scene of glowing magma and shifting colors.
Descend to base camp for breakfast, then begin your drive toward Lake Afdera.
Stop at the lake for a refreshing swim in its mineral-rich, salt-laden waters—an invigorating break in the journey.
Continue the drive to Semera for your return flight to Addis Ababa.
Upon arrival, relax and freshen up at a local hotel before enjoying a farewell cultural dinner, complete with traditional Ethiopian cuisine, live music, and dance performances.
Later, transfer to Bole International Airport for your international departure.
