Two-Day Trip to the Rift Valley

Day 1: Addis Ababa to Hawassa

After breakfast, depart from Addis Ababa and head south through the scenic Ethiopian Rift Valley, a part of the great Afro-Arabian Rift system. This picturesque journey offers breathtaking landscapes and a chain of lakes, home to diverse bird species and vibrant ecosystems.

Your first stop is Tiya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its 36 ancient monuments, including 32 intricately carved stelae adorned with mysterious symbols—testaments to the region’s rich historical legacy.

Continue to Lake Ziway, well known for its abundant birdlife and five volcanic islands. Here, enjoy a short boat trip to explore Bird Island, where you may spot pelicans, storks, and even hippos.

After lunch at a local restaurant, proceed to Hawassa, a lively lakeside city in the Sidama region. Upon arrival, transfer to your accommodation and unwind while soaking in the beautiful sunset over Lake Hawassa.

Day 2: Hawassa to Addis Ababa

Begin your morning with a visit to the Lake Hawassa fish market, where local fishermen bring in fresh tilapia and catfish. Enjoy the lively atmosphere and perhaps sample a traditional lakeside breakfast of grilled or raw tilapia.

Next, explore Amora Gedel Park, a lush lakeside area perfect for birdwatching and spotting the rare black-and-white Colobus monkeys in the treetops.

Afterward, begin your return drive to Addis Ababa. Along the way, stop at Abijatta-Shalla Lakes National Park, a birdwatcher’s haven known for large flocks of flamingos, natural hot springs, and a variety of wildlife species.

Make a brief stop at Lake Langano, a popular swimming destination famed for its calm, bilharzia-free waters—ideal for a quick dip or lakeside relaxation.

Arrive in Addis Ababa in the afternoon, with time to prepare for your departure. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian cultural restaurant, featuring live music and traditional dance performances. Finally, your driver will transfer you to Bole International Airport for your flight home.
